Paulina Villarreal's teaching encompasses applied voice, vocal pedagogy, repertoire, and artist development at the university level, alongside an active schedule of masterclasses and residencies in the United States and internationally.
TEACHING
The most compelling voice is not manufactured. It is uncovered.
Every singer brings a distinct instrument, history, and artistic identity to the studio. My teaching begins with the individual voice, identifying what is already working, addressing what limits freedom, and building a technique that allows the singer to communicate with greater ease, consistency, and confidence.
My approach is grounded in principles of the Italian bel canto tradition and the teachings of Giovanni Battista Lamperti, alongside the functional voice training of W. Stephen Smith. Rather than imposing a predetermined sound, I use these principles as a framework for developing efficient coordination, technical freedom, and an understanding of how the voice functions.
The goal is independence. Singers should leave the studio with more than a set of instructions: they should understand their own instrument, recognize what they need, and have the tools to make informed technical and artistic choices.
Technique should reveal individuality, not erase it.
